July 02, Colombo: The four suspects arrested in connection with the suspicious death of a person undergoing residential rehabilitation at the Kandakadu Treatment and Rehabilitation Center in Welikanda have been remanded until the 14th of this month.
Polonnaruwa Magistrate remanded the four suspects including two Sri Lanka Air Force officers and Two Army officers when they were presented to the Polonnaruwa Magistrate's Court this afternoon.
On the night of June 28th, a tense situation arose at the Kandakadu Rehabilitation Center after the suspicious death of an inmate.
During a clash between the inmates and security personnel, 886 inmates out of the 998 people at the center for the rehabilitation of drug addicts had escaped while 270 people stayed in the camp.
The Welikanda Police, who are investigating the incident, have recorded statements from a group undergoing rehabilitation at this center.
Also, after taking statements from camp counselors, 4 people were arrested in connection with the incident. Two Air Force Sergeants, an Army Sergeant and an Army Staff Sergeant who worked as support counselors at the center were remanded in custody.
Based on their statements, the police found a thick electric wire and two bamboo sticks, which are suspected to have been used to assault the deceased.
The body of the deceased was identified by his younger brother and some friends and accordingly the postmortem examination is scheduled to be conducted on the 5th.
So far, 679 inmates who escaped from Kandakadu Rehabilitation Camp have been arrested or have returned on their own.
