Sat, Jul 2, 2022, 11:23 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

July 02, Colombo: The Minister of Transport, Highways and Mass Media Dr. Bandula Gunawardena instructed the railway authorities to repair and use 250 imported Romanian railway carriages that have been out of service for more than twenty five years.

The Minister gave instructions to the railway authorities including the General Manager of Railways while attending an observation tour of the Tantri Company yard established in Dematagoda for the repair of railway carriages.

Importing a new train carriage costs about 200 million rupees, while repairing a carriage by Tantri, a company established in Dematagoda for the refurbishment of railway carriages, costs only 20 million rupees.

The company has already delivered 200 Romanian railway carriages and powerset carriages to the Railway Department for operation.

Minister Bandula Gunawardena emphasizes that more train carriages should be put into operation as with the fuel crisis more passengers have resorted to transportation by train.

Transport and Highways Ministry Secretary RR Premasiri and Railway General Manager Dhammika Jayasundara also participated in this observation tour.
