July 02, Colombo: Four security personnel have been arrested on suspicion of the death of an inmate in the Kandakadu Treatment and Rehabilitation Center, Welikanda. Police said.
The four suspects who served as support counselors at the Kandakadu Treatment and Rehabilitation Center include Two Air Force sergeants, an Army Staff Sergeant and a Sergeant, the Police said.
Police Media Spokesman Senior Superintendent of Police Nihal Talduwa said the body of the inmate who had died recently at the Kandakadu Treatment and Rehabilitation Center has been identified by his brother and a group of friends.
Police Media Spokesman said 678 of the detainees who escaped from the center during a clash ensued after the inmate’s body was found on Tuesday had been arrested yesterday (01) evening.
Another 272 detainees including those who did not escape and others who escaped and returned to the center are currently staying at the Kandakadu Treatment and Rehabilitation Center as of yesterday and only 27 detainees are yet to be arrested, the Police Spokesman said.
A senior police officer of Polonnaruwa police said the deceased person has been identified as Buddhika Rajapaksa, a resident of Demodara.
The suspects arrested for the death of the inmate will be produced in the Polonnaruwa Magistrate's Court tomorrow (2).
Police are conducting further investigations into the incident. The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka has also commenced an investigation into the death of the inmate on Tuesday.
