Jan 29, Colombo: Two persons were killed in a lorry accident on the Kaduwela to Kadawatha lane of the Colombo Outer Circular Expressway this morning (29), the police said.
The police said a lorry traveling along the expressway had rammed into a lorry that had stopped on the side of the road to change a tire.
Police said the driver of the travelling lorry had died after he was thrown out of the vehicle, and fell on to the road.
The owner of the lorry who was travelling on the passenger seat was trapped in the vehicle and received fatal burn injuries when it caught fire after the collision.
Police said the driver of the parked lorry and his assistant were arrested over the incident
Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa informed the public to refrain from carrying out any repairs on vehicles, in case of an emergency along the expressway.
If a vehicle experiences an emergency while traveling on the expressway, the occupants should immediately notify the Disaster Management Division on 1969 emergency hotline, and seek their assistance to carry out any repairs, the Police Media Spokesman said.
SSP Nihal Thalduwa said stern legal action will be taken against motorists who carry out repair activities on vehicles, on the side of the expressway, without obtaining assistance from the emergency service.
