* Opposition MPs boycott President’s tea party
Wed, Jan 19, 2022, 10:08 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Jan 19, Colombo: Opposition parliamentarians including the MPs of Samagi Jana Balawegaya, have boycotted the tea party hosted by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa for parliamentarians and guests after presenting the government’s policy statement in Parliament yesterday.

The tea party was held at the Parliament restaurant yesterday morning after the President delivered the government’s policy statement following the ceremonial opening of the second session of the 9th Parliament.

The other political parties that boycotted the tea party were the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna and the Tamil National Alliance.

Opposition party members did not attend the party as a sign of protest against the President, an opposition MP said.

The Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella has said that the tea party was boycotted as the President’s policy statement did not offer any solutions to the burning issues of the people. He said the policy was merely a statement.

Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Batticaloa District Parliamentarian Govindan Karunakaran has stated that he boycotted the tea party as the manifesto did not provide any solution to the problems of the Tamil people in the North and East.
