* Two killed when tractor falls into precipice in Monaragala

Jan 18, Colombo: The driver of a tractor and his assistant were killed when their tractor fell into a precipice at the 9th bend near the water tank on the Geelong Mountain Road in Monaragala last evening (17), Monaragala Police said.

The deceased have been identified as Daya Douglas (58), a resident of Badalkumbura, who was the driver of the tractor, and a father of three and his assistant Kitnan Sivayogan (55), a resident of Kumarawatta, Monaragala, and a father of three.

The two were employed by a private construction company that carpeted the Kumarawatta road in Monaragala.

The accident has happened when they were returning from the top of the hills after dropping off the carpet mixture required for the road from Monaragala to the upper part of the Geelong mountain range.

The driver has lost control near the 9th bend of the road and the engine part of the tractor had come off the trailer and fell into the precipice

The assistant in the back of the trailer has been thrown onto the road and sustained severe head injuries. The driver was pinned under the tractor engine that fell into the precipice.

After the residents informed the police about the incident, the police arrived and with the assistance of the residents of the area admitted the injured to the Monaragala District General Hospital. The assistant was dead at the time of admission and the driver of the tractor died shortly afterwards, the police said.

OIC of the Monaragala Traffic Division Buddhika Abeykoon is conducting further investigations on the instructions of Monaragala HQI PS Chaminda Sanjeewa.
