Jan 17, Colombo: Minister of Highways Johnston Fernando says that a record income has been received from the newly opened Mirigama-Kurunegala stretch of the Central Expressway in 12 hours.
According to the Minister the toll expressway earned over Rs. 2.8 million from 12.00 noon to 12.00 midnight Sunday (16th).
The Athugalpura Entrance of the Central Expressway was opened to the public on Saturday (Jan 15) under the patronage of the President and the Prime Minister. Thereafter, the public were allowed to travel from Mirigama to the Gettuwana entrance to Kurunegala and from Gettuwana to Mirigama free of charge from midnight on Saturday (15) to 12 noon on Sunday (16).
During the period from 12.00 noon to 12.00 midnight on Sunday (16) the expressway has received an income of Rs. 2,805,100.00, Minister of Highways Johnston Fernando said.
The Minister of Highways further stated that 13,583 vehicles have traveled on the expressway during the period and no single accident occurred.
