Jan 14, Colombo: Inspector General of Police C.D. Wickramaratne says extensive investigations are underway to find out whether there was a conspiracy behind the recent discovery of a hand grenade inside a church in Borella.

The IGP said a comprehensive investigation is being conducted to find the person who brought the explosive material into the church, the purpose of setting it up and those who aided and abetted him.

Investigations are being continued with the assistance of experts in the relevant fields on the scientific, environmental, technical and personal evidence received in this regard.

The IGP said police have recorded statements from 14 individuals with regard to the incident and the investigation units have already been ordered to arrest all the suspects in the case irrespective of their rank and enforce the law without delay.

He said that the investigation into the incident has not been completed yet and that CCTV footage has also been used for the investigation.

The IGP further stated that a similar bomb had been found earlier at a private hospital in the Narahenpita area in Colombo and after an extensive investigation that lasted for nearly three months, all those involved in the incident were arrested and brought to justice.
