Apr 26, Colombo: The massive six-day protest march ‘Samagi Bala Walk’ from Kandy to Colombo organized by the main opposition party Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) against the crises faced by the people including the increase in fuel prices, power cuts, increase in the cost of living and the repressive measures of the government began this morning with a huge turnout near the Kandy Central Market.

The city of Kandy was overcrowded with protesters and a large number of protesters lined up along the road to encourage the protest march.

Named the 'People's Force to Drive Out the Oppressors', the protest march was launched at around 10.00 am under the leadership of the Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa.

A large number of farmers, fishermen, public servants, trade union representatives, civil society representatives, political party activists and many others joined the protest march.

Protesters gathered near the Central Market in Kandy early this morning displaying placards and chanting slogans. Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, SJB General Secretary Ranjith Maddumabandara and other parliamentarians joined the protest march at around 10.00 am.

Prior to starting the protest march, members of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya led by the Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa participated in religious activities.

Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa visited the historic Temple of the Tooth in Kandy this morning and paid homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic and obtained the blessings from the Maha Sangha. He also met with the Chief Prelate of the Asgiriya Maha Viharaya, Most Ven. Warakagoda Sri Gnanaratana Mahanayake Thero and inquired into his well-being.

Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa said the Samagi Jana Balawegaya will not participate in the musical chair competition that is being held to deceive the 22 million people of the country.

The Leader of the Opposition said that the sole objective of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya was to fulfill the aspirations of the people of this country and that he was never ready to be a part of a Rajapaksa government.
