* Sri Lankan anti-government protesters celebrate the New Year at protest site

Apr 14, Colombo: Thousands of Sri Lankans engaged in a protest for the sixth consecutive day at the protest site in front of the President’s Office at the Galle Face in Colombo peacefully celebrated the Sinhala and Tamil New Year dawned this morning.

The protest demanding solutions to the crisis in the country and the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa still going on at the protest site named as “Gota Go Village”. Today is the 6th day of the protest which started on the 9th and today too a large number of people are participating in the protest.

A special feature of the protest today was that the protesters also celebrated the dawning of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year performing all the auspicious rituals as the whole country celebrated the occasion.

There they lit fires at the auspicious time and boiled the milk amidst the chanting of Seth Pirith by the Maha Sangha. A table with milk rice and various traditional sweets was also prepared for all those present. People from different parts of the island brought sweets and served the protesters.

Protesters also played creative ‘Raban’ tunes made for the occasion. In addition, the protesters have planned to hold several traditional New Year games near the Galle Face Green today.

Despite the prevailing rainy weather, protesters can be seen staying at the Galle Face Green until their demands are met.
