* Two petitions filed against Ajith Nivard Cabraal’s appointment as Governor of the Central Bank
Thu, Sep 23, 2021, 11:15 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Sept 23, Colombo: Two fundamental rights petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court seeking an order quashing the decision to appoint Ajith Nivard Cabraal as the Governor of the Central Bank.

The General Secretary of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Ranjith Madduma Bandara and MP Manusha Nanayakkara filed these two fundamental rights petitions before the Supreme Court.

The petitioners allege that Ajith Nivard Cabraal, who was appointed as the Governor of the Central Bank, has been charged with embezzlement of public funds.

The petitions also point out that Mr. Cabraal is a highly politicized person.

The petitioners further stated in the Supreme Court that the appointment of Mr. Cabraal as the Governor of the Central Bank would undermine the expectations of the people and thereby violate the fundamental human rights guaranteed by the Constitution.
