* Hand grenade found in Lanka hospital was taken from a minister’s official residence

Sept 17, Colombo: According to the police sources, information have revealed that the suspect had brought the grenade found in a toilet of a private hospital in Narahenpita from a minister’s official residence at Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 07.

The sources said these information was revealed according to a statement made by the suspect, who is an employee of a construction company residing in the Uppuveli area in Trincomalee during interrogation by the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) in connection with the incident.

The suspect had revealed that he had gone to repair the official residence in Colombo 07 about three months ago and had found several hand grenades and live ammunition in a drawer of a table in the room.

The suspect had taken the live grenade and the other ammunition had been taken away by the other accomplice who was with him, police sources said.

Accordingly, several teams of investigators visited the official residence in Colombo 07 and Mahawa and Welikanda yesterday (16) afternoon in search of the ammunition that was taken by his co-worker, reports say.

Meanwhile, during investigations ammunition into the hand grenade found in the toilet of Lanka hospital at Narahenpita the CCD has arrested another person from Mahawa, Kurunegala who was in the possession of 18 rounds of live ammunition.

It is said that a cabinet minister is currently residing in the house at Wijerama and the suspect had said that the live grenade and the ammunition were found before the relevant minister had settled in the official residence.

The suspect was arrested by the Colombo Crimes Division on the 15th. Permission has been obtained from to detain and question the suspect under the Prevention of Terrorism Act as further investigations are being carried out into the incident.
