Sept 11, Colombo: The Ministry of Trade states that an investigation is being carried out by order of the Minister of Trade Bandula Gunawardena regarding the transfer of two containers of garlic obtained by the Sathosa (CWE) from the Ports Authority to a third party.
The Minister has also ordered the suspension of the responsible officers.
With the intervention of the Ministry of Trade, Cabinet approval has been obtained to provide essential goods that have not been cleared from the port by importers, through the CWE outlet network at concessionary prices to consumers.
Accordingly, while the supply of these essential items to the CWE outlet network is in progress, two containers of garlic obtained from the Sri Lanka Ports Authority for Lanka Sathosa have recently been sold to a third party without any approval from the CWE top management.
Dr. Bandula Gunawardena, Minister of Trade, has directed the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the CWE to suspend the duties of the officers who had taken such action at a time when the state machinery was working at its best to supply goods to the consumers at concessionary prices.
The Minister also directed the CWE Chairman and CEO to conduct a speedy investigation into the sale of the two containers of garlic to a third party and submit a report.
Trade Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena also instructed the CWE Chairman to lodge a complaint with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for further investigations.
