* Colombo Dockyard lauds the government for the support received during the COVID-19 pandemic

Oct 25, Colombo: A group of officials including the Chairman of the Colombo Dockyard PLC met Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa today (25) at Temple Trees and expressed their gratitude for the assistance received from the government to earn foreign exchange by producing two ships during the Covid epidemic.

The US$ 35 million Buoy Tender Vessel “Al-Faw” and Pilot Station Vessel “Shatt Al-Arab” were built at the Colombo Dockyard during the Covid period and are due to be handed over to the Iraqi government on the 4th December.

Supporting the Government's future plans, the first regional branch for ship repair will be opened on the 2nd December at the Trincomalee Port, the CEO of Colombo Dockyard Mr. D.V. Abeysinghe informed the Prime Minister.

He also said that in addition to Trincomalee, the Company hopes to expand its services centered on the Hambantota Port.in the future through the existing office.

A high-tech ship is currently being built for the Orange Marine Company in France and is the second largest ship to be built at the Colombo Dockyard. The project is worth US$ 45 million.

In addition, a group of six eco-friendly ships are currently being built at the Colombo Dockyard for Norway. The Colombo Dockyard officially invited the Prime Minister to join the handover of this group of ships.

Strengthening the country's economy, the Colombo Dockyard expects to generate revenue of US$ 100 million in 2021 and US$ 120 million in 2022.

The Premier instructed the Colombo Dockyard officials to take steps to create more employment opportunities through the Trincomalee and Hambantota regional branches.

Additional Secretary to the Prime Minister Chaminda Kularatne, Chairman of the Colombo Dockyard Hideki Tanaka, Chief Executive Officer D.V. Abeysinghe, Chief Operating Officer, KBP. Fernando, General Manager S.G. Senadheera, Environment Officer Supun S. Pathirage and others were present.
