Fri, Oct 22, 2021, 11:55 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Oct 22, Colombo: Minister of Industries Wimal Weerawansa says continuing the culture of producing what is needed locally, Abans’ project to locally manufacture refrigerators and air conditioners is considered a strategic investment.

The Minister said steps will be taken to further strengthen this trend by proposing to the Cabinet through a Cabinet paper to provide the relevant facilities to the project.

He was speaking after inspecting the premises of Abans’ new refrigeration and air conditioner manufacturing plant under construction in Millaniya, Kalutara yesterday.

"We came to observe today to see how Abans has taken the initial steps to revitalize some very important industries. A large one lakh square foot factory is being built on this five acre land. The company hopes to launch a Sri Lankan-made refrigerator in the first quarter of next year, before the New Year in April. Thereafter, as the second phase, they are preparing to manufacture air conditioners locally for the first time in Sri Lanka,” Minister Weerawansa said

Speaking further the Minister said this is a very important step in the industrial sector of this country. “It is continuation of the culture of producing what we want locally. That tendency is further strengthened.”

“As the Minister of Industry, I hope to submit a Cabinet Memorandum and propose to the Cabinet to accept this project as a strategic investment in principle and to grant tax concessions and other benefits given to strategic investments,” he said.

Minister of State Jayantha Samaraweera was also present on the occasion.
