* Train services in the Western Province to resume from October 25

Oct 22, Colombo: Passenger train services suspended for about three months since provincial travel restrictions were imposed due to the Covid-19 epidemic, will be resumed in the Western Province from October 25, Transport Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi said.

In a statement to the media, Minister Wanniarachchi said, at today's Special Committee on COVID-19 Control meeting chaired by the President, it was decided to commence train services in the Western Province from October 25 and it is possible to commence inter-provincial train services from November 1.

Although train services will commence in the Western Province from October 25, only season ticket holders will be able to travel on those trains, the Minister said.

She also said that steps will be taken to increase the number of train journeys.

Accordingly, 70 locomotives, 500 compartments and 65 power sets have been completely repaired and restored to proper operation, the Railway Department said.

The Railway officials also said the engineers of the Railway Department have also certified that the island wide railway system and signal systems have been made for running.

Accordingly, the Railway Department plans to operate 50 trains on the main line, 06 trains on the Northern line, 64 trains on the coastal line, 08 trains on the Kelani Valley line and 18 trains on the Puttalam line.

Accordingly, the Department of Railways requests the public using the train services to follow the health and safety guidelines of the Ministry of Health.
