Oct 21, Colombo: If the provincial council election is to be held soon, more likely it would be held under the old system, said the Chairman of the Election Commission, Attorney-at-Law Nimal G. Punchihewa.
The official told 'Dinamina' that if the election is held soon, the old provincial council election system with minor amendments will be possible.
“PC elections cannot be held under the new system soon. New laws have to be introduced in Parliament. There are also delimitation issues. We cannot say how long these will take. Therefore, if the provincial council election is to be held soon, it will have to be held according to the old system.”
“It can be said that the expenditure for the provincial council election will increase according to the Covid 19 situation. Accordingly, with the current situation the expenditure can be estimated according to the health guidelines received by the voters when they come to cast their votes to polling booths,” the Election Commission Chairman said.
