* Sri Lanka Navy recovers the body of missing Indian fisherman

Oct 20, Colombo: Sri Lanka Navy rescue teams engaged in the Search and Rescue (SAR) operation today recovered the body of the Indian fisherman who went missing when his vessel sank while illegally fishing in Sri Lankan waters after colliding with a Sri Lankan Navy vessel.

The Indian vessel with three fishermen aboard sank northwest of the Kovilan Lighthouse in Sri Lankan waters in the evening of 18th October. The Navy rescued the other two fishermen.

Navy rescue teams managed to retrieve the body of the missing fisherman this morning and the remains were transferred to the Kankasanthurai harbor by a naval craft, the Navy said.

Meanwhile, the magisterial inquest of the deceased was carried out this afternoon (20th October) by the Additional Magistrate of Kayts on being informed by the Kayts Police. Jaffna Judicial Medical Officer and Representatives of the Consulate General Office of India in Jaffna were also present during the proceedings.

Further, the two Indian fishermen rescued by the Navy had been summoned to the location by the Kayts Police, to identify the deceased.

Subsequent to the inquest, the body has been transferred to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital for onward legal proceedings, on the directives of Additional Magistrate.

Following the recovery of the body of the missing fisherman the Navy’s SAR operation also concluded.
