Oct 20, Colombo: A SriLankan Airlines flight carrying a delegation of Buddhist monks departed from Katunayake Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) this morning to participate in the opening of Kushinagar International Airport in India as the first flight to arrive at the airport.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the International Airport in Kushinagar on Wednesday, 20 October 2021 on the auspicious Wap Poya Day with the inaugural international flight operating from Colombo to Kushinagar.

Sri Lankan delegation on the inaugural flight is led by Namal Rajapaksa, Minister of Youth and Sports, Minister of Development Co-ordination and Monitoring and State Minister of Digital Technology and Enterprise Development. State Ministers DV Chanaka and Sisira Jayakody Chairman of SriLankan Airlines Ashok Pathirage and 95 Buddhist monks are also in the delegation.

The new airport was built to facilitate Sri Lankan Buddhist pilgrims to Kushinagar, where Buddha attained 'mahaparinirvana' connecting Buddhist pilgrimage sites around the world.

Kushinagar is considered to be a focal point of the Buddhist Circuit in India and the new international airport is expected to strengthen people to people interactions between India and Sri Lanka substantially.
