Wed, Oct 13, 2021, 10:04 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Oct 13, Colombo: Three officials have been appointed to conduct an internal investigation into the Lanka Sathosa garlic fraud, Trade Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena said.

The Secretary to the Ministry of Commerce with additional secretaries and two other parties is conducting the internal investigation in addition to the CID investigations, the Minister said.

Responding to a question raised by a journalist at the media briefing held at the Government Information Department yesterday (12), the Minister said further investigations into the fraud have been handed over to the CID.

He said that after handing over the investigation to the CID, four high ranking officials of Sathosa have been produced before the court.

When the complaint was lodged regarding the incident, the Peliyagoda Police have arrested the suspects and produced them before the Wattala Magistrate's Court. Bail has been granted to the suspects and court proceedings are continuing.

The Minister said that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had instructed the Minister of Public Security, Dr. Sarath Weerasekera to conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations made in the media and to carry out the necessary justice process.

Speaking at the event, Media Minister and Co-Cabinet Spokesman Dullas Alahapperuma said that the house of the official who made the allegations was currently being monitored by cameras and mobile police protection has been provided and there is no truth in reports that the security of the person is in jeopardy.

Minister Sarath Weerasekera, as the Minister in charge of the subject, has assured to him that the Police Department was committed to investigating the veracity of these allegations, Minister Alahapperuma said.
