* Record promotions to over 10,000 ranks in the Army to coincident with the Army Day-2021

Oct 10, Colombo: Sri Lanka Army, established in 1949 in post-Independence Ceylon, marks its 72nd anniversary today.

Army Commander General Shavendra Silva said in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic steps have been taken to commemorate the 2021 Army Day in accordance with health guidelines.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces graced the Army Day anniversary ceremonies as the Chief Guest, held at Saliyapura, Gajaba Regiment Regimental HQ today for the first time in the history.

Meanwhile, on the recommendation of the Army Commander and the Ministry of Defense, President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has promoted 567 Officers and 10368 Other Ranks in the Army, coincident with the Army Day-2021.

Accordingly, 8 Senior Brigadiers have been promoted to the rank of Major General, 17 Colonels to the rank of Brigadier, 42 Lieutenant Colonels to the rank of Colonel, 60 Majors to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and 256 Captains to the rank of Major, 10. Lieutenants have been promoted to Captain, 152 Second Lieutenants to the rank of Lieutenant and 22 Probation Officers to the rank of Lieutenant (QM).
