Nov 29, Colombo: The Police Special Task Force (STF) has launched a 24-hour operation covering the entire island to nab criminals involved in organized crime, drug trafficking and various other crimes.
These operations are carried out on the basis of intelligence provided by the Police Special Task Force Intelligence Unit, Police Intelligence Units, other security forces intelligence services and information provided by the general public.
Special weapons and tactics and motorcycle squads at 72 STF camps and 12 sub-camps and special units of the STF consisting of small teams have been deployed for these operations.
The arrest of members and supporters of powerful underworld gangs has been given priority through these special operations.
A few weeks ago, organized criminals ‘Army Amila’ and ‘Gandara Saman’ were arrested in Tangalle area in a crackdown on organized crime in the Southern Province under the operation to control the Southern Province-centric organized crime wave.
According to the STF data on raids, the elite police force) has arrested 1084 suspects in connection with heroin trafficking and possession, 112 arrests in connection with cannabis and Kerala cannabis and 104 suspects in connection with the possession of illegal cigarettes during the period from June last year to date.
Commander of the Police Special Task Force DIG Waruna Jayasundara told ‘Dinamina’ that operations are being carried out on the instructions of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Minister of Public Security Rear Admiral (retd) Dr. Sarath Weerasekera, Secretary Defense (retd) General Kamal Gunaratne and Inspector General of Police CD Wickramaratne in line with the Government’s policy of eradicating organized crime and drug trafficking.
