Nov 28, Colombo: The car that overturned into the Mahaweli River in the Ilukmodara area on the Tennekumbura Gurudeniya main road in Kandy last night was recovered this afternoon along with the body of the missing passenger after a 14-hour operation, the police said.

The Navy, Army and Police launched a search operation for the car that fell into the river.

Three people were traveling in the car at the time of the accident and other two including the driver were rescued by the residents in the area and admitted to the Kandy General Hospital with injuries. The third person’s body was found today with the car.

The deceased has been identified as a resident of 39, Maligathenna, Gurudeniya.

The water level of the river has risen due to the recent heavy rains, making it difficult to locate the car, police said.
