* Another 13 dangerous ferries in the East, most in Trincomalee and Batticaloa

Nov 27, Colombo: It has been found that there are another 13 more dangerous ferries in operation in the Eastern Province, Secretary of the Provincial Ministry of Road Development Mr. I.K.G. Muthubanda has said.

Following the Kinniya bridge ferry accident, Governor Anuradha Yahampath had sent a team of officials including naval engineers to identify other such dangerous ferries in the Eastern Province. Accordingly, the team had been engaged in such observations yesterday (26) and will continue to carry out further observations today (27).

Accordingly, a report on the condition of these ferries will be submitted to the Governor soon, Mr. Muthubanda told Dinamina.

It has been found that these ferries are commonly used in the Trincomalee and Batticaloa districts and in addition to the Kinniya in the Trincomalee district, such ferries are also used in Muttur and Verugal.

The team will inspect all the ferry operations in the Batticaloa District, including Mantur and other ferry transport areas.

Six people, including four children, were killed and 26 others were injured when a ferry transporting about 35 people including school children capsized in the Kurinchankerny Lagoon in Kinniya, Trincomalee on 23 November.

Following the accident, Eastern Province Governor Anuradha Yahampath ordered an immediate inquiry into the unfortunate incident.
