* Three arrested in connection with Kinniya ferry accident remanded till Dec 08

Nov 24, Colombo: Three persons were arrested today (24) in connection with Tuesday’s ferry accident in the Kurinchankerny Lagoon in Kinniya, Trincomalee.

The Police Media Spokesman's Office said the two operators and the owner of the ferry that capsized while transporting over 30 people including school children in the Kurinchankerny Lagoon in Kinniya yesterday (23) have been arrested.

Six people died in the accident and 20 others were hospitalized with injuries. Special Navy teams rescued 26 people.

The dead included four children between the ages of three and eight, a 32-year-old woman and a 70-year-old man. Eighteen of the injured are being treated at the Kinniya Hospital and one each at the Kilinochchi and Trincomalee Hospitals.

The owner of the ferry and the operator were arrested by the Trincomalee Police today (24) after they surrendered to the police in connection with the incident. Kinniya police have also arrested the ferry conductor.

The arrested suspects are aged 35, 40 and 53 and are residents of Periyathamuna, Kinniya.

The suspects were produced before the Trincomalee Magistrate's Court today and remanded until December 08.
