Nov 23, Colombo: Former Prime Minister and United National Party (UNP) Colombo District parliamentarian Ranil Wickremesinghe said in Parliament today that he would propose to the Speaker that the right to take action should be given to Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus if women parliamentarians are insulted or harassed.
Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe while participating in the Committee Stage Debate on the Budget said that the relevant proposal was made as an issue has arisen regarding the violation of the privileges of a female Member of Parliament.
He also stated that the right to take action regarding the harassment of a female member of parliament should be given to the Women Parliamentarians' Caucus itself.
The former Prime Minister said that the Chairperson of the Women Parliamentarians' Caucus and others could meet the Speaker and discuss the matter.
He also expressed his appreciation to the Chairperson of the Women Parliamentarians' Caucus (WPC) who is appearing in connection with the current violation of privileges.
WPC Chairperson, State Minister Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle has drawn attention of the Speaker to a recent statement made by the ruling party Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Tissa Kuttiarachchi directed at the opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Rohini Kavirathna as well as SJB and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa’s wife.
It is reported that Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena has issued a stern warning to MP Tissa Kuttiarachchi regarding expressing his views in a manner that is detrimental to the dignity of Parliament. The Speaker said that strict measures would be taken in future to prevent such statements.
