* Gazette notification of the Registrar of Pesticides will be invalidated - Ministry

Nov 23, Colombo: The Ministry of Agriculture announces that the gazette notification issued by the Registrar of Pesticides on the 1st of this month lifting the ban on five pesticides will be invalidated.

A statement issued by the Ministry of Agriculture said that a disciplinary inquiry will be conducted against the Registrar of Pesticides.

Registrar of Pesticides, Dr. J. A. Sumith on November 01 has issued an Extraordinary Gazette notification revoking an earlier Gazette issued in 2014, which had banned the use and sale of five pesticides including Glyphosate.

The Extraordinary Gazette notification issued by the Registrar of Pesticides “in the interest of the public and on the advice of the Pesticide Technical and Advisory Committee” revokes the Order made under Section 11 of the Control of Pesticides Act, No. 33 of 1980 and published in Gazette Extraordinary No. 1894/4 of December 22, 2014.

Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage has said the Registrar of Pesticides Dr. J.A Sumith has been removed from the post with immediate effect and steps will be taken to revoke the gazette lifting the ban on sale and use of Glyphosate and other agrochemicals.

Minister Aluthgamage says that the ban on pesticides is still in effect.
