* Mobile phone found in the possession of imprisoned former MP Ranjan Ramanayake

Nov 23, Colombo: Prison officials have taken into custody a mobile phone found in the possession of imprisoned former Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Ranjan Ramanayake, who is currently detained at the Welikada Prison Hospital.

Ramanayake is currently detained at the Welikada Prison Hospital while receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital Orthopedic Clinic for a knee injury.

During a routine search of the prison hospital at around 10.00 Sunday night (21), prison officers on duty seized a mobile phone and a hand free set from his possession.

Former parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake who was serving his four-year sentence for contempt of court at the Angunakolapelessa Prison was transferred to the Welikada Prison Hospital on the 10th of this month to be admitted to the Orthopedic Clinic of the Colombo National Hospital due to a knee injury.

Prisons Commissioner (Administration and Rehabilitation) Media Spokesman Chandana Ekanayake said Ranjan Ramanayake is to be charged under Section 78 of the Prisons Ordinance for possession of this prohibited item.

Mr. Ekanayake said that the Prisons Department has taken steps to conduct a further preliminary investigation into the incident.
