Nov 22, Colombo: State Minister of Agriculture Shasheendra Rajapaksa says a special discussion will be held with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa today (22) regarding the importation of chemical fertilizer and agrochemicals once again.
Officials of the Ministry of Agriculture as well as representatives of many other parties are scheduled to participate in this discussion which will be held at 10.30 am today.
The State Minister said that this discussion will be held to obtain the approval of the President for the re-importation of herbicides, pesticides and fungicides. He added that they are hoping to seek permission to import third and fourth tier fertilizer as well.
The Ministry of Agriculture earlier said permission will be granted to import agrochemical fertilizers and plant nutrients of proper quality and standards for the cultivation of Maha season crops.
Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture, Senior Professor Udith K. Jayasinghe said the relevant departments have been given permission to import such agrochemical fertilizers and plant nutrients for paddy, maize, vegetable, tea, coconut and rubber cultivations.
However, Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage said the government has not taken a decision to import chemical fertilizer to be used on essential crops including paddy and vegetables and the reports that permission has been granted to import plant nutrients and agrochemicals have no basis.
