* Sri Lankan leaders express condolences over the sudden demise of Indian military chief

Dec 08, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa on Wednesday expressed condolences over the tragic death of India’s Chief of Defense Staff General Bipin Rawat, his wife and 11 others in a helicopter crash.

President Gotabaya in a statement posted on Twitter said he was deeply saddened to hear of the sudden demise of General Bipin Rawat and others and extended condolences to the families and the Indian people.

“Deeply saddened to hear of the sudden demise of General Bipin Rawat, Mrs Rawat & others in the tragic helicopter accident in Tamil Nadu. I extend my condolences to the families & to all Indians on behalf of the people of Sri Lanka.”

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa taking to Twitter said he was shocked and saddened to hear the tragic news of the untimely death of General Rawat and others.

“Shocked and saddened to hear the tragic news of the untimely death of India’s first CDS General Bipin Rawat, his wife & several members of his staff. Our heartfelt condolences go out to all the families who lost their loved ones, the government & people of India,” the Premier tweeted.

Chief of Defense Staff General Bipin Rawat, his wife and 11 others died after the Mi-17V5 helicopter came down in hills near Coonoor city in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday.

The Indian Air Force, in a statement, said General Rawat had been on his way to the Defense Services Staff College in Wellington, Tamil Nadu, to address the faculty and students when his helicopter went down near Coonoor, around noon local time. There was only one survivor among the nine passengers and four crew members, the statement said.
