* Speaker appoints a committee to probe recent unruly incidents in parliament
Wed, Dec 8, 2021, 01:28 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 08, Colombo: Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena today (Dec. 08) announced the appointment of a committee to look into the recent unruly incidents in Parliament and submit a report with recommendations.

The 11-member committee chaired by Deputy Speaker Ranjith Siyambalapitiya includes Ministers Chamal Rajapaksa, Bandula Gunawardena, and Vasudeva Nanayakkara, State Minister Susil Premajayantha, and MPs Gayantha Karunatilake, Rauf Hakeem, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, Vijitha Herath, Ranjith Madduma Bandara and M.A. Sumanthiran.

A tense situation occurred in the Parliament on 3rd and 4th December when Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Manusha Nanayakkara was not given time to address the parliamentary session. The SJB MPs alleged that ruling party MPs attempted to assault MP Manusha Nanayakkara on two occasions.

Members of the SJB then have decided to boycott Parliament sessions, alleging that opposition members are being intimidated by ruling party members.

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena yesterday (07) requested all Members of Parliament to attend the sittings of Parliament and assist in the proceedings of the Committee appointed to look into the incident that took place last week.

Following a discussion with the Speaker, the SJB MPs have however, decided to attend the parliamentary sittings starting today (Dec. 08).
