Dec 07, Colombo: Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa says that the government is committed to making Sri Lanka a sustainable global maritime hub in the region.

The Prime Minister made this observation while delivering the keynote address virtually at the World Oceans Summit Asia-Pacific Tuesday.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa stated that Sri Lanka, as an island nation surrounded by the Indian Ocean has a great responsibility to respect its people as well as the ocean and protect the Indian Ocean.

The regionally-focused World Ocean Summit Asia-Pacific virtual event under the theme “Investing in a blue economy” is being held from December 6th–10th 2021.

The summit will convene 100 speakers and 2000 participants virtually over five days. Dedicated tracks on shipping, marine renewable energy, plastics, aquaculture, and fishing will provide insight focused on the Asia-Pacific.

The Prime Minister said that as research and development requires significant financial and human resources, developed countries armed with sustainable maritime technology and knowledge are invited to assist developing island nations in improving maritime well-being and enhancing marine biodiversity.
