Dec 07, Colombo: China and Sri Lanka Tuesday signed an aid agreement of Rs. 7.68 billion for the comprehensive refurbishment of Sri Lanka Superior Courts Complex.
Various discussions have been held since around 2012 to renovate the building of the Supreme Court and the Supreme Court complex where the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal are currently located, with the full support of the Government of China.
The Supreme Court Complex, built in 1989 with China Aid, has been playing a central role in the island's judiciary for more than 32 years.
Following discussions with the Chinese government an agreement was reached to expedite the renovation of the building.
The implementation of the project was launched Tuesday (07.12.2021) under the patronage of the Minister of Justice Ali Sabry.
The agreement was signed between Secretary to the Ministry of Justice Priyantha Mayadunne and Chinese Economic and Commercial Adviser LI Guangjun at the Ministry of Justice today. Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong was also present on the occasion.
