May 19, Colombo: The 12th National War Heroes’ Day Commemoration Ceremony was held today at the War Heroes’ Memorial in Battaramulla to commemorate the war heroes who sacrificed their lives for the protection of the unity and territorial integrity of the country.
This year’s National War Heroes’ Day commemoration ceremony, was held under the patronage of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa accompanied by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The event was organized by the Commanders of the three Armed Forces and the Inspector General of Police, adhering to strict health guidelines.
Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, former President and Parliamentarian Maithripala Sirisena and Defense Secretary General (Retd.) Kamal Gunaratne were also present.
The war heroes’ commemoration ceremony began with the singing of the national anthem. Afterwards a two minute silence was observed for the brave war heroes who gave their lives to win independence for the motherland.
Thereafter, the Air Force using national flag helicopters paid floral tributes to the War Heroes Memorial. The President and the Prime Minister then paid floral tributes to the heroes who sacrificed their lives for the sovereignty of the country. Parents and relatives of the fallen war heroes also paid floral tributes to the fallen heroes.
During this dignified and solemn ceremony, heroic War Heroes of the Army (23,962), Navy (1160), Air Force (443), together with 2598 Policemen and 456 Civil Security Department personnel, altogether a total of 28,619 who had made the supreme sacrifice in the fight against LTTE terrorism before May 2009 were respectfully remembered for their gallantry, invaluable sacrifices and selfless dedication.
