* Suspected killer of the decapitated woman found on Dam Street commits suicide - police

Mar 03, Colombo: Police Media Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said a woman whose headless body was found in a travelling bag in the Dam Street, Colombo has been identified and the suspected killer has committed suicide.

Police investigation has found that the decapitated body was of a 30-year old unmarried woman from Theppanawa, Kuruvita and the suspect who left the bag in the busy street and fled was a 52-year-old Sub Inspector of Police attached to the Buttala Police.

According to the information obtained from CCTV footage, the suspect was seen traveling with a woman to a lodge in Hanwella. Later, only the suspect was seen coming out of the lodge with the traveling bag and boarding a Hanwella - Pettah bus plying on Route 143.

Police Media Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said the information about the woman was revealed during the investigation of the CCTV footage.

The suspect was identified as a Sub Inspector of Police attached to the Buttala Police, who was on leave at the time. The Police suspect the murder is a result of an illicit affair with the unmarried woman.

The suspect Sub Inspector has also committed suicide after the incident, the police spokesman said.

The body of the suspect was found hanging from a tree in a forest near his house in the Pahe Kanuwa area of Badalkumbura, police spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.

A bottle of poison was also found near the body and police suspect that he may have committed suicide by consuming poison.

Further investigations are continuing.
