* Police arrest 1,353 for violating Covid rules

June 13, Colombo: Sri Lanka Police have arrested 1,353 people for violating Covid quarantine laws in the last 24 hours ending at 6 am Sunday, Police Media Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.

Police Media Spokesman said that this is the highest number of arrests made in a single day since the pandemic began on 18 March 2020.

A total of 31,395 people have been arrested so far for violating the quarantine rules since October 30 last year.

Meanwhile, 3,615 vehicles were inspected at roadblocks set up at 14 entry and exit points in the Western Province yesterday and 188 individuals were warned and released.

A special operation was launched in the Western Province yesterday and 354 persons were arrested and 218 vehicles were taken into Police custody during the operation carried out between 10am and noon and between 3pm and 5pm yesterday.

The special operation will be carried out from 10 am to 12 noon and from 3 pm to 5 pm today as well, the police said.
