July 24, Colombo: The Colombo Magistrate’s Court has granted permission for Police to detain MP Rishad Bathiudeen’s wife, and three others for 48 hours and interrogate over the death of a 16-year-old girl who was employed at the MP’s residence and the rape of another female domestic aide within the same premises.
Police Friday arrested Shehabdeen Ayesha, wife of Rishad Bathiudeen, her father Mohammed Shehabdeen and Ponnaiah Pandaram alias Shankar, the broker who brought the girl to the MP’s residence in connection with her death.
Police also arrested a brother of Bathiudeen’s wife in connection with a rape of a 22-year-old girl during her employment at the MP’s residence from 2015 to 2019.
All four suspects were produced before the Colombo Additional Magistrate Kanchana Neranjala de Silva earlier this morning (24).
The Magistrate granted permission to the Kirulapone Police to detain MP Rishad Bathiudeen’s wife Shehabdeen Ayesha for 48 hrs for questioning and Borella Police received permission to detain and question the other three suspects.
Jude Kumar Ishalini, a resident of Diyagama, Hatton, who was a servant in the house of former Minister Bathiudeen, was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital on July 03 with burn injuries. She died on July 15 while being treated in the intensive care unit.
Police Media Spokesman Senior DIG Attorney Ajith Rohana stated on Friday (July 23) that preliminary investigations have revealed that the girl had been sexually abused and that she had been taken to Colombo and employed as a servant.
