* Rishad Bathiudeen’s brother-in-law arrested for rape

July 23, Colombo: A brother of parliamentarian Rishad Bathiudeen’s wife has been arrested in connection with the rape of a 22 - year - old girl who was working as a servant at the official residence of former minister, police spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana said.

The suspect is a 44 year old resident of Medawachchiya.

The Police Media Spokesman said the alleged rape had come into light during the interrogation of two women, who were previously employed at the former minister’s private residence, in connection with the death of a teenaged girl while working as a maid at the former Minister’s residence.

The police had recorded statements from about 20 people in connection with the death of the 16-year-old girl and from the statements by two young women, who were employed at the Bathiudeen residence before the arrival of the teenaged maid, have revealed that the women were sexually abused by the suspect between 2015 and 2019.

The Police Spokesman said the suspect has raped the 22-year-old woman twice while she was employed at the MP Bathiudeen’s residence from 2015 to 2019. The two women, both from Dayagama, have been brought to the former minister’s residence by the same broker identified as Ponnaiah Bandaram alias Shankar, who had trafficked the 16-year-old girl.
