Fri, Jul 23, 2021, 10:58 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

July 23, Colombo: Police Media Spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana stated that three persons, including the wife of MP Rishad Bathiudeen, have been arrested in connection with the death of a 16-year-old domestic helper at the parliamentarian’s private residence.

Among those arrested were the 76-year-old father of the MP's wife and a 60-year-old man from Dayagama who had worked as a broker to bring the girl to the Bathiudeen’s residence, the police spokesman said. They have been arrested for allegedly employing and abusing the minor girl.

J. Ishalini, the 16-year-old girl, was hospitalized with burn injuries on July 3 while working as a housemaid at the former minister’s residence in Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo. She died on the 15th while receiving treatment at the Intensive care unit of the Colombo National Hospital.

Although the death has been ruled as a suicide, the post-mortem report has revealed that the girl had been sexually abused for some time.

The detainees will be questioned for 72 hours on detention orders. They are expected to be produced before the court later today.
