Jan 16, Colombo: Five police teams have been deployed to arrest two armed men involved in the heist of Rs. 40 million worth cash and gold from a financial institution on the Gampaha-Miriswatta road Friday, the Police said.
The financial institution has complained that the armed suspects who had arrived on a motorbike last evening (15) had entered the financial institution as depositors and brandishing a firearm robbed the money. The suspects also had a hand grenade and a firearm in their hands, the police were told.
The robbers had allegedly stolen Rs. 900,000 in cash and Rs. 39 million worth gold from the financial institution, Gampaha ASP Thusitha Kumara said.
Three police teams led by Gampaha Chief Inspector of Police Saman Jayasinghe and Minuwangoda and Ganemulla OICs on the instructions of SSP Indika de Silva in charge of the Gampaha Division under the supervision of ASP Thusitha Kumara and two teams of intelligence units have been deployed to conduct further investigations and arrest the suspects.
