* Over 7,000 names of residents in the North are omitted in the electoral roll - Rishad Bathiudeen
Sat, Jan 16, 2021, 09:13 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Jan 16, Colombo: All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC) leader and Member of Parliament Rishad Bathiudeen has sent a letter to the Elections Commission stating that it is unfair to remove the names of 7,727 residents of the original villages in the North from the electoral rolls.

In his letter to the Elections Commission on the 13th, MP Bathiudeen has requested Election Commission to take necessary steps to register the people displaced by the three-decade-long war in the electoral lists of their hometowns.

The ACMC leader pointed out that although the displaced people affected by the three-decade-long war have been voluntarily resettled in their home districts of Mannar since 2009 after the end of the war, they have been temporarily relocated to their homes in the Puttalam district due to inadequate infrastructure development in the hometown areas.

He said that in several previous elections, including the last parliamentary election, cluster polling stations had been set up to facilitate voters in the Puttalam district to cast their ballots, but it was learned that Elections Department officials had taken steps to remove their names from the list during this time of registration.

As a result, their fundamental rights have been violated, the letter said.
