Jan 13, Colombo: Dr. Sudath Samaraweera, the head of the Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry, has stated that a person, who had recently arrived from the United Kingdom confirmed to have been infected with the new COVID-19 variant which is rapidly spreading in the UK.
Research conducted by a team led by Prof. Neelika Malavige, in Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine, Faculty of Medical Sciences;, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, has revealed that the patient was infected with the new strain of the virus, Specialist Dr. Sudath Samaraweera stated.
The head of the Epidemiology Unit further said the new strain has been found from a person who had recently arrived in Sri Lanka by air from Britain. Investigations in this regard are underway, he said.
This new corona virus strain reported from the UK first is named VUI-202012/01 or Variant of Concern 202012/01 (VOC-202012/01) and also known as lineage B.1.1.7. Virologists estimate that the new variant spreads by about 50 percent faster than other Covid-19 strains.
