Jan 10, Colombo: Shehan Semasinghe, State Ministry of Samurdhi, Home Economy, Micro Finance, Self-Employment and Business Development Friday (08) met with the Governor of the Central Bank Prof. W.D Lakshman at the Central Bank premises to explore ways to resolve the microfinance debt crisis.
During the meeting the two sides paid special attention to the microfinance crisis faced by the rural poor and exchanged views on providing a speedy solution.
It was also agreed at the discussion that a comprehensive program should be launched jointly by the State Ministry and the Central Bank.
The need to update the Microfinance Act No. 6 of 2006 as per the prevailing conditions was also emphasized.
The two sides also exchanged views on provision of low interest loans to small and medium scale and young entrepreneurs.
Secretary to the State Ministry Neil Bandara Hapuhinna, Additional Secretary CD Kaluarachchi, Director General of Samurdhi Bandula Thilakasiri and officials of the Central Bank were also present.
