Jan 08, Colombo: It has been revealed that all 11 inmates who died in the recent riots at the Mahara Prison were shot.
When the relevant case was taken up in the Wattala Magistrate's Court Friday, the panel of experts appointed by the court had reported to the court that the 11 detainees who died in the clash had died due to fatal injuries sustained in the shooting that day.
Earlier the post mortem reports of 08 detainees were submitted by the expert committee while the post mortem reports of the other three were presented to the court today. Accordingly, the committee informed the court that the other three detainees had also died due to gunshot wounds.
Wattala Magistrate Buddhika Sri Ragala has ordered the Director General of Health Services to bury the bodies of the three detainees as per the health guidelines as they were not infected with the corona virus. The Magistrate has also ordered that the relatives of the three detainees be given the opportunity to perform religious rites and bury the dead.
Earlier the prison authorities said the inmates were killed when two groups of inmates clashed with each other.
Meanwhile, senior officers of 15 prisons including the Superintendent of the Mahara Prison have been transferred with immediate effect. Accordingly, the Mahara Prison Superintendent has been transferred to the Prison Training School.
Prisons Commissioner General Thushara Upuldeniya told Neth News that senior officials of 15 prisons including Welikada Prison, Colombo Remand, Angunakolapelessa and Galle have been transferred. He also said that these transfers were made based on service requirements.
