Apr 21, Colombo: Supporters of the National Thowheeth Jama’ath, which carried out eight attacks on Easter Sunday, April 21, 2019, will soon be indicted, Sri Lanka’s Attorney General Dappula De Livera said Tuesday (20).
Attorney General’s Coordinating Officer, State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne said all arrangements have been made to file indictments against all the accused involved in the Easter Sunday attack.
Accordingly eight indictments in connection with the 8 suicide bombings, the indictment in connection with the April 16, 2019 blast in the Kattankudy area and the indictment for running an explosives depot in Wanathawilluwa will be filed soon, she said.
State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne said action has been taken to prosecute all supporters of the National Thowheeth Jama’ath, who conspired with Mohammed Saharan Hashim since 2016 in connection with the Easter attack and indictments were filed in the Kegalle court yesterday (20) regarding vandalism of Buddha statues in Mawanella.
She added that 21 indictments had been filed, 45 exhibits and 92 witnesses had been named.
Charges have also been filed under Section 2 (1) g of the Prevention of Terrorism Act and against inciting disunity between ethnic and religious communities in connection with the Easter attack.
State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne said the Attorney General also drew attention to the incidents that took place in several parts of the island before the Easter attack and he will take steps to enforce the law regarding the incidents in Thopur, Mawanella, Nuwara Eliya, Hambantota, Pothuhera and Katupitiya.
She further stated that all these legal matters are being handled with the participation of a special team from the Attorney General’s Department and with the direct intervention of the Attorney General.
