Mon, Apr 19, 2021, 09:06 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Apr 19, Colombo: Minister of Education Professor G.L. Peiris announced that a decision has been taken to reopen all universities in Sri Lanka on 27th April.

Addressing a press briefing in Colombo today, he said that the universities will be reopened for academic activities while strictly following health guidelines.

However, he said that due to an issue existing with regard to reopening hostels, only third year and fourth year students will be brought in at the start.

“Universities all over the island will be reopened on the 27th of this month. This is done by strictly adhering to all health recommendations. The main problem is the accommodation in hostels. Arrangements have been made to carry it out under strict health guidelines,” he said.

Prof. Peiris, said classes will start for the third year and fourth year students next week and classes will gradually be opened for the first year and second year students afterwards. He added that all necessary arrangements required to conduct university examinations have been organized by the University Grants Commission.

Speaking further the Minister said, there was a strong demand from parents and children to reopen schools and the second school term of this year commenced today according to health recommendations.

“Today our government has succeeded in opening schools all over the island in a very safe manner. I was able to do that successfully, especially under the health guidelines. Our country was able to become one of the very few countries in the world where the school education was open to all children in the country.”

Accordingly, classes with 15 students should be held every day of the week. The classes having 16 to 30 students must be divided into two groups and the classes must be held every other week. The classes having more than 30 students must be divided into three groups and classes must be held for equal number of days.

This time the school holidays in August have been limited to one week, the Minister announced.

“We have also decided to reduce the August vacation to one week. We are holding the GCE Advanced Level Examination from October 04 to 30. Grade 5 Scholarship Examination will be held on October 03 and the GCE Ordinary Level Examination will be held in the last week of January 2022. Even dates for exams are scheduled and students need to be prepared for exams. Children need rest. Considering all these factors, the government has decided to limit the August school holidays to one week.”

It has been reported that in many schools today, the attendance of students and teachers was high today.
