Wed, Apr 7, 2021, 07:50 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Apr 07, Colombo: Former State Minister Ajith Mannapperuma is expected to be appointed to fill the vacancy left by Ranjan Ramanayake, according to Elections Commission sources.

Mr. Mannapperuma is the next candidate to get the highest number of preferential votes after Mr. Ranjan Ramanayake in the Candidate List of Samagi Jana Balawegaya Gampaha District at last year’s general election.

He was in the 5th position in the Gampaha district preferential list of the Samagi Janabalavega in the last general election obtaining 47,212 preferential votes.

Mr. Mannapperuma has been elected to Parliament twice before. He was first elected to Parliament in July 2013 to fill the vacancy created by the death of former United National Party Member of Parliament Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena. As the Secretary General of Parliament has informed the Election Commission that Ranjan Ramanayake’s seat is vacant, it is reported that Ajith Mannapperuma’s name is expected to be nominated for the vacancy by the Gampaha District Returning Officer on the instructions of the Election Commission.
