Wed, Apr 7, 2021, 06:35 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Apr 07, Colombo: Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena has informed Parliament today (07) that imprisoned Samagi Jana Balawegaya parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake’s parliamentary seat will be vacated.

The Speaker said considering the legal advice the Secretary General of Parliament had informed the Election Commission of the vacancy of MP Ramanayake’s seat.

Sri Lanka’s Supreme Court in January sentenced former state minister and Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake for 04 years of rigorous imprisonment after convicting him of contempt of court.

The Supreme Court also rejected a motion filed by MP Ranjan Ramanayake requesting the court to reconsider his sentence.

The Court of Appeal on Monday dismissed without further proceeding a petition filed by the MP requesting the Court to issue an order preventing the parliament from working to annul his parliamentary seat.
