* Opposition criticizes government for bringing Chinese COVID-19 vaccine not approved by WHO
Sun, Apr 4, 2021, 11:42 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Apr 04, Colombo: The government has brought the Chinese made COVID-19 vaccine to Sri Lanka without the approval of the World Health Organization and it does not care about the lives of the people, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) parliamentarian Manusha Nanayakkara said.

Galle District Parliamentarian and the Media Spokesperson of the SJB said four members of the National medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA), including the Chairman, have been removed from the Authority and the Chinese-made COVID vaccine has been imported to Sri Lanka.

MP Nanayakkara said that the NMRA officials had to leave because they did not approve the Chinese vaccine.

SJB parliamentarian Manusha Nanayakkara was expressing his views at a seminar held to raise the awareness of the public on the current status.

A series of public awareness seminars jointly with the People's Intelligence Center consisting of university lecturers are currently being conducted island wide and five seminars were held in the Polonnaruwa and Kegalle districts on Friday and Saturday.

“The government delayed the importation of the corona vaccine. Our experts say that the approval of the World Health Organization has not been granted for the corona vaccine from China. However, when the doctors and officials of the National Medicines Regulatory Authority said they could not approve the Chinese vaccine, the government asked them to resign. That is how four people resigned refusing to approve the vaccine.”

“After that a doctor who is not even in Sri Lanka has been appointed as the chairman. Who appointed this chairman? The son of the former chairman of the Southern Provincial Council has been appointed as the chairman of NMRA. After that permission has been given to import the Chinese vaccine to Sri Lanka,” SJB MP explained.

Sri Lanka's senior medical experts have stated that the Chinese vaccine Sinopharm, which were given by Beijing should not be used on Sri Lankan nationals, according to a report published in Daily Mirror. Senior medical practitioners both in the government and private sectors have expressed concerns over the use of the Chinese vaccine, it said.

MP Nanayakkara said the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA), which is the decision making body for the importation of drugs into Sri Lanka has been politicized as well and it has been decided to bring the Chinese vaccine to Sri Lanka. “It shows how much this government cares about human lives,” he said.

“Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s government is deteriorating day by day. Even Sakkara cannot prevent the decline of this government. That is why we in the Opposition have to hold such seminars to make the people aware,” he said.

“This government is destroying the environment. Lands cut down in the forest are not given to the village farmer. These lands are given to businessmen in Colombo. After the deforestation, the people have to face the problem of wild elephants. The government does not care about the issues that these people have to face.”

“Now the country's economy is collapsing day by day. Now the rupee is depreciating day by day. Now you have to pay two hundred rupees to buy a dollar,” MP Manusha Nanayakkara added.
