* Ruwan Wijewardene appointed new Deputy Leader of UNP

Sept 14, Colombo: Former Member of Parliament Ruwan Wijewardene has been appointed as the new Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP).

Wijewardene was elected in a secret ballot held during a special meeting of the Working Committee held at the Sirikotha party headquarters today (14), party sources said.

Ravi Karunanayake and Ruwan Wijewardene were nominated for the post of Deputy Leader of the party. It is reported that Ruwan Wijewardene received 28 votes and Ravi Karunanayake received 10 votes in the secret ballot.

Accordingly, Ruwan Wijewardene was elected as the new Deputy Leader with a majority of 18 votes.

However, a leader has not been elected at today’s meeting. Sources say that Ranil Wickremesinghe will remain the leader of the UNP until January.
